About Ukraine
Geography
Ukraine is the country in Eastern Europe, bordering in the East and North with Russia, in the North-West - with Belarus, in the South-West – with Moldova, in the West – with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. In the South Ukraine is washed by Black Sea, in the South-East – by Azov Sea. Territory of Ukraine is mostly plain, in the West there are Carpathian mountains (Hoverla, 2061 m) and at the Crimean peninsula – Crimean mountains (Roman-Kosh, 1545 m). Few elevations (Volynskaya, Podolskaya and Pridneprovskaya) and hard rock exits cover less than 5% of the territory. Total area – 603.7 thousands of km2. (Crimea - 27 thousands of km2).

Kyiv.
Climate
Moderate, mostly continental, at the South Crimean coast – subtropical Mediterranean. Average temperatures in January vary from -8 C in the North-East to +4-8 C at the Crimea in the South, in July – correspondingly from +18 С to +24 C. Precipitations are the following: in the North-West – about 600-700 mm a year, in the South-East – up to 300 mm, in Crimean mountains - 1000-1200 mm, in Carpathian mountains – up to 1600 mm, at autumn-winter mostly.
Population
About 48.5 millions of inhabitants. Mostly Ukrainians (77.8%) and Russians (17.3%), there are also plenty of Byelorussians, Moldavians, Crimean Tatars and other nationalities.
Government
Democratic republic. The head of the state is the President. The head of the government – the Prime Minister. Legislative authority – Supreme Council (Verhovna Rada). The structure of Ukraine includes autonomous Crimean Republic with its own Supreme Council, Council of Ministers, Supreme Court and Arbitrage, local representative and governmental authorities.
Money
National currency is hryvnya (UAH). There are bank-notes with a face value of 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 hryvnya as of old pattern, as of new one (1997, different range of colours and design). There are coins with a face value of 1 hryvnya, 50, 25, 10 copecks made of yellow metal and 5, 2, 1 – of white. Foreign currency usage in restaurants and shops is officially prohibited.
Visa
Citizens of close foreign countries (countries of CIS), European Union, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Canada, USA and Japan, who stay in Ukraine for less than 90 days, don’t need Ukrainian visa. Citizens of other countries have to obtain visa in Ukrainian Consulate or Consulate department in Ukrainian embassy in their country.
Places of interest
In the territory of Ukraine many cultures and nations left their traces - from ancient barrows, sites of ancient settlement in Priazovye and Greek policies of a coastal part of Black sea to old Slavic settlements and samples of classical architecture of later epochs.
Kyiv
By quantity of churches and temples Kyiv is the richest city in the territory of CIS – Monastery of Saint Sophia complex (founded in XI century), Vydubitzkiy monastery (founded in XI century), Mykhailivskiy cathedral (founded in 1070-1088), Georgievskiy cathedral (founded in 1696-1701), the Church of Spas on Berestov (founded in 1113-1125, Yuriy Dolgorukiy is buried there)...
